A man has been shot dead by police in Sydney’s Potts Point after he allegedly assaulted two women in an apartment building.
Police were called to St Neot Avenue at around 10:50 am this morning in response to reports of an armed man entering the building and attacking the women inside the complex.
The man, who was allegedly in possession of a knife, lunged at and threatened officers when they arrived at the scene. Shots were fired after a deployed taser proved ineffective in subduing the man. One shot ended up “striking the man”, NSW Police said.
“The male was sometime later confirmed deceased at the scene,” Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna said at a press conference.
The full condition of the women, aged 48 and 56, is not yet known, but it’s reported they were injured. Police said they live in two seperate apartments within the complex.
Both women were taken to hospital in a stable condition for further treatment. McKenna said one of the women sustained “quite significant” head and facial injuries “consistent with being assaulted with a weapon”, while the other had “more superficial” injuries consistent with “blunt force trauma”.
Police have not yet confirmed whether the man was known to the women, but McKenna indicated that at this stage police “don’t believe” there is any connection.
The man has not been formally identified. Initial reports suggest he was in his late 30s or 40s.
A critical incident was immediately declared and a crime scene has been established in the area. Street access has been cut off as multiple investigations are already underway.

The incident will be investigated internally by NSW Police’s Professional Standards Command, which is overseen by police watchdog the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
