A special armed forces parade is set to take place in Dumfries next summer, it has been revealed.
The Royal Regiment of Scotland will march through the town to officially mark its freedom of Dumfries and Galloway.
This will follow on from a civic ceremony held at the Crichton Estate in March this year where the military organisation was named an Honorary Freeman of the region.
Speaking at last week’s full council meeting, Councillor Archie Dryburgh said: “The Royal Regiment of Scotland will exercise their freedom in Dumfries next year, marching through the town with bayonets fixed, proud of the association they have with us in the region.
“Early discussions have taken place on this and we’re looking at a couple of dates in either May or June next year.”
Councillor Dryburgh has been the region’s armed forces champion for the past 11 years and presented his 10th annual report at the full council meeting last week.
He said: “This year coming will be the 30th year that the Royal British Region Scotland will be holding their annual conference in Perth.
“In 2024, they are looking to move around Scotland, and I’m having a bit of a discussion with them bringing it to Dumfries for the 2024 national conference.
“That’s going pretty positively so far.”
This year’s conference is a two-day event, taking place on May 20-21, at the Dewars Centre in Perth. As well as speeches from key legion figures, awards and recognitions are handed out.
The event also includes news from the Royal Canadian Legion, Poppyscotland, and the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Service League.
