Measures to enshrine abortion access in states constitutions are projected to pass in New York, Maryland, Colorado, and Arizona, while facing a setback in Florida, according to a source.
In Arizona, abortion rights supporters are celebrating a significant victory as residents voted to overturn the state's ban on abortion at 15 weeks into pregnancy. Dawn Penich, an organizer with Arizona for Abortion Access, highlighted the enthusiasm and support seen at polling locations across the state, indicating a strong backing for the measure.
On the other hand, Florida's abortion rights measure is expected to receive a majority of votes but fall short of the 60% threshold required for passage. Consequently, the current six-week abortion ban in Florida will remain in effect, impacting access to abortion services in the state.
Nancy Northup, President & CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, expressed disappointment over the outcome in Florida, emphasizing that despite the majority of voters supporting reproductive freedom, the stringent threshold and disinformation campaign hindered the measure's success.
Meanwhile, the anti-abortion group SBA Pro-Life America hailed Florida as a model for future pro-life victories in ballot measure battles, underscoring the significance of their efforts in shaping the outcome of such initiatives.
