Argentina's President Javier Milei embarked on a three-day visit to Madrid, stirring controversy even before his arrival. Accusing the Spanish socialist government of bringing “poverty and death” to Spain, Milei opted for an unconventional approach during his visit.
Unlike traditional diplomatic norms, Milei chose not to meet with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez or any government officials. Instead, he attended a far-right summit hosted by Sánchez's political opponent, the Vox party.
Milei, known for his libertarian views, has gained global attention for his alliances with figures like Elon Musk and Donald Trump. His recent book, “The Way of the Libertarian,” outlines his radical free-market economic ideas and his rise in Argentine politics.
During his visit, Milei condemned socialism as “an intellectual fraud and a horror in human terms,” while promoting his austerity measures in Argentina. He pledged to make Argentina “the country with the most economic freedom in the world” by eliminating the central bank.
At the event in Madrid, Milei embraced his ideological ally Santiago Abascal, the leader of the Vox party, with whom he had planned to meet. The Vox summit aimed to unite far-right figures across Europe ahead of upcoming elections.
Tensions between Milei and Sánchez escalated when a minister from the Spanish government insinuated that Milei had used narcotics. In response, the Argentine presidency criticized Sánchez's socialist policies and highlighted corruption allegations against the prime minister's wife, Begoña Gómez.
Milei's visit to Madrid showcased his unorthodox approach to diplomacy and his firm stance against socialism. Despite the controversies surrounding his visit, Milei remained steadfast in his commitment to promoting libertarian ideals and economic freedom.
