Area of Merseyside sees Covid infections more than double

A part of Merseyside has seen positive Covid tests more than double - and the rest of the region has recorded exponential increases in infections.

According to the latest data from Public Health England, Sefton had 1,659 infections in the week ending March 10 - that's 910 more positive tests than the previous week. It means that Sefton's week-on-week percentage change figure increased 122%.

Exponential rises in infections were also recorded in the five other areas of the Liverpool City Region. The rises were: 64% in Liverpool; 91% in Knowsley; 76% in Halton; 80% in St Helens; 63% in Wirral.

The Liverpool City Region saw its week-on-week percentage change figure rise by 78%. England recorded a rise of 63%. And areas that border the Liverpool City Region recorded rises in infections.

Liverpool

Liverpool's positive tests came to 2,484 cases in the week ending March 10, which is 971 more cases than the previous week. This meant the week-on-week percentage change figure increased by 64%.

The latest infection rate was 496.3 cases per 100,000 people.

Wirral

Wirral's positive tests came to 1,793 cases in the week ending March 10, which is 696 more cases than in the previous seven days. This meant the week-on-week percentage change figure increased by 63%.

The latest infection rate was 552.8 cases per 100,000 people.

Halton

There were 669 positive tests over the last week - that's 289 more cases than in the previous week. This means the week-on-week percentage change figure increased by 76% in Halton in the week ending March 10.

The latest infection rate is 515.6 cases per 100,000 people.

St Helens

There was a total of 825 cases in the week ending March 10, which is 366 more cases than in the previous week. The latest infection rate in St Helens is 455.6 cases per 100,000 people and the week-on-week percentage change figure increased by 80%.

Knowsley

There was a total of 764 cases in the week ending March 10, which is 363 more cases than in the previous week. The latest infection rate in Knowsley is 501.1 cases per 100,000 people and the week-on-week percentage change figure increased by 91%.

Sefton

Sefton had a total of 1,659 cases in the week ending March 10, which is a 910 more cases than in the previous week. The latest infection rate is 601.3 cases per 100,000 people and the number of cases increased by 122% week on week.

Liverpool City Region

There were 8,194 positive tests over in the week ending March 10, which is 3,595 more cases than in the previous week. This means the week-on-week percentage change increased by 78%. The latest infection rate is 481.22 cases per 100,000 people.

Warrington

There were 1,072 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending March 10, which is 493 more cases than the previous week. The week-on-week percentage figure increased by 85%. There was an infection rate of 511.95 per 100,000 people.

Cheshire West and Chester

There were 2,041 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending March 10, which is 854 more cases than the previous week. The latest infection rate is 593.62 cases per 100,000 people, and the week-on-week percentage increase by 72% in cases.

England

In the week ending March 10, England recorded 306,149 coronavirus cases, which is 118,624 more cases than in the previous seven days. There was a week-on-week percentage increase of 63% in cases in England, and there was an infection rate of 541.38 per 100,000 people.
