Ardeer Thistle beat the weather and Royal Albert with first half super show

Ardeer Thistle 4 Royal Albert 0

Sean Kenney reckons Ardeer's first-half super show which sank Royal Albert was among their top performances of the season.

The Stevenston men dominated from start to finish to pick up a first West of Scotland League Conference B win in four games.

It was remarkable that the game was even on given heavy rain and strong winds saw matches postponed across the whole of the west region.

However, there were no problems with the surface at the Ardeer Stadium with the home side committed to playing patient, passing football throughout the 90 minutes.

Goals before the interval from David Gray, Glenn Lewis and Ryan Wilson put Ardeer in control with sub Callum Wardrope on target in the closing stages.

And boss Kenney was pleased to see his team serve up a treat for the freezing fans huddled together in the enclosure with Ardeer moving up to seventh place in the standings.

He told Ayrshire Football News: "The committee deserve a lot of credit. If you look at the park just now you could get another game on it. On the performance, I'm delighted with the boys. I thought we were excellent.

"I thought we played the way we try to play and the way we need to try and play. There was passing and moving, we were being exciting, and I hope the good crowd were happy with what they seen.

Ardeer Thistle manager Sean Kenney (Irvine Herald)

"I don't think we're a team that suits going long. I don't like it when a game becomes a bit like basketball and too much end to end. I like us to control the game and control the ball.

"It was an enjoyable way to play and an enjoyable thing to watch for everybody."

Ardeer opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Gray found the far bottom corner of the net and Wilson almost made it 2-0 three minutes later when his long-range free-kick whistled just past the post.

Kenney's troops struck for a second time midway through the first half when Wilson delivered a near-post cross for Lewis who produced a tidy finish.

The third goal arrived in the 38th minute. Ardeer countered from a Royal Albert free-kick with the visitors' keeper racing from his line and failing to check Wilson's progress before the striker rolled the ball into an empty net.

Ardeer had plenty of chances after the break to extend their lead further but were a bit wasteful in front of goal until the 85th minute when Wardrope took advantage of a goalkeeping error to turn home.

A trip to Airdrie to face Gartcairn is up next Saturday for Ardeer who have just three league games remaining of their campaign.

Kenney added: "We need to secure that promotion into the second division [Championship] for next season. We just need to win our games."
