AN Edinburgh based gin company has opened a “bold and striking” revamped site in central Edinburgh.
Edinburgh Gin’s new distillery now occupies the premises in the redeveloped East Market Street Arches next to Waverley train station.
Keeping the main exterior stonework, Scottish firm Staran Architects have added a mezzanine bar and roof terrace to the site.
They have also designed windows that allow Edinburgh Gin’s new copper gin making stills to be visible to passers by.
James Ferguson, co-founder of Staran Architects, said: “The site provided an incredible opportunity to combine a modern, bold and striking design with the historic nature of the distillery’s city surroundings.
“We are very proud of this latest addition to the city centre and for playing a key role in delivering a space which will serve the distillery in its capacity to make gin and provide a unique space for visitors to enjoy.”
Staran have been involved in the £150 million plans to upgrade the Waverley station area since 2015, and this is the latest completed project to update the arches in particular.
Previous projects are now home to a hotel, a community hub and a restaurant.
The historic railway arches have changed hands repeatedly and it is claimed they were previously used to house axe throwing and even circus elephants.

Ferguson added: “Staran is passionate about redefining the use of historic spaces, and have a lot of experience in this field. The Edinburgh Gin project provided an exciting challenge.”
