A field in Dorset that had puzzled archaeologists for the best part of a decade has finally given up its secret. Bournemouth University academic Dr Derek Pitman first came across substantial walls hidden beneath the ground during a student training excavation back in 2018, but at the time there simply was not enough evidence to say what the walls belonged to, how old they were, or who might once have lived there. The question stayed with him for seven years, until he assembled a much larger team, made up of specialists from Bournemouth University, Forestry England, Wessex Archaeology, the National Trust and TCMS Heritage, to reopen the dig.
