Apprenticeships and Rolls-Royce: 5 things we learned from chancellor John Healey’s speech

  1. Chancellor John Healey has announced a £100 million fund for mayors to launch a new Local Apprenticeship Service during his speech at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool.
  2. The scheme will see teams work like football scouts to connect young people with local businesses, aiming to tackle the nearly one million individuals currently not in education, employment, or training.
  3. Outlining his economic vision for a new age of industrialisation, Mr Healey revealed that Rolls-Royce is investing £300 million into factories across Derby, Bristol, Glasgow and Rotherham.
  4. The Chancellor pledged that his upcoming first Budget will maintain strict fiscal discipline while offering the public breathing space and promoting good regional growth and jobs.
  5. Mr Healey warned that the UK faces more straitened economic conditions than during his previous Treasury tenure under Gordon Brown, placing the blame for the country's heavy debt burden on the Conservatives.
