Apple Wants You to Pay for Something That Used to Be Free

Having to pay for something that was previously free is never a good feeling, so if you're a fan of watching Major League Baseball on Friday nights prepare yourself.

Apple (AAPL) announced that its Friday Night Baseball broadcast will require an Apple TV+ subscription to view this season. Last season, Apple broadcast the games for free.

DON'T MISS: Apple Makes a Huge Live Sports Streaming Deal

This move follows Apple new monthly $14.99 price point for its Major League Soccer package, which includes broadcasts of every game. But unlike the MLS package, fans that want to watch MLB on Friday only need to pay the $7 per month for Apple TV+ with no extra subscription fee.

Apple's first Friday Night Baseball broadcast of the new season will be a doubleheader on April 7.

Apple's Sports Ambitions

The 2023 MLS season will be the first in a 10-year, $2.5 billion deal between Apple and the sports league.

The deal is Apple's biggest investment into sports broadcasting, and on top of the subscription revenue, Apple plans to deliver advertising to both paid and free subscribers as an additional revenue stream for the deal, according to a report.

Outside of MLB and MLS, Apple was also heavily linked to the negotiations with the NFL for the rights to Thursday Night Football and its Sunday Ticket package.

Amazon and Google, respectively, won the rights to those packages.
