Apple says iPhone Duo's foldable display layer can be replaced

Apple has said the nano-texture cover layer on the inner display of its upcoming iPhone Duo can be removed and replaced, giving users a way to refresh the layer if it wears down or the display crease becomes more visible over time, ANI reported.

Apple vice president of hardware engineering Kate Bergeron disclosed the detail in an interview, saying the layer was designed to remain in good condition for as long as possible but could eventually be replaced.

"It's actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one," Bergeron said, according to ANI.

The cover layer is designed to help reduce the visibility of the crease running through the middle of the foldable phone's inner display. Bergeron said Apple had carried out a "significant amount of engineering work" to ensure the layer lasts as long as possible.

However, the company will allow customers to have it replaced if it deteriorates or the crease becomes more noticeable with use.

Replacement cost

In the US, iPhone Duo owners with AppleCare+ can have the cover layer replaced for $19, according to Apple's website.

Apple has not yet announced the replacement cost for customers without AppleCare+.

The replacement is expected to be carried out through Apple Stores and Apple Authorised Service Providers. It remains unclear whether Apple will allow users to remove and replace the layer themselves.

iPhone Duo launch

The iPhone Duo is scheduled to open for pre-orders on October 16 at 5 am Pacific Time (5:30 pm IST), with the device set to go on sale in stores on October 23.

The replaceable cover layer gives Apple a service option for one of the key physical characteristics of its foldable display, as the crease can become more visible as the device is used over time.
