Jailhouse calls reveal Georgia school shooter’s obsession with online notoriety after attack

After killing two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Georgia, the teenage gunman spoke frequently with his mother from jail about his online notoriety, with his mother at one point saying she would create a shrine in his honor.

Prosecutors played recordings of those conversations between Colt Gray and his mother during the 16-year-old’s sentencing hearing Tuesday. Gray pleaded guilty Friday to 55 counts, including murder, for the Sept. 4, 2024, shooting at the school, located about 45 miles (73 kilometers) northeast of Atlanta. The discussions raised enough concern among officials that Gray’s mother was later prohibited from communicating with him.
