Manchester United took a big step towards qualifying for the League Cup final with a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in their semi-final first-leg bout on Wednesday evening.
Marcus Rashford hit in his 18th goal of the season after six minutes to become the first player to score more than five goals in a single edition of the competition since Carlos Tevez in 2008/09.
Wout Weghorst made it 2-0 just before half-time as he prodded the ball home to net his first goal since first arriving at the club 12 days ago before Bruno Fernandes fired home to ice the cake in the dying embers.

United fans who travelled to Nottingham had an enjoyable evening ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford next week. Here are four things they may have missed during the 90 minutes.
Antony’s reaction to Weghorst goal
Antony is currently enduring a frustrating spell at United but made some bright touches on the night before his exit on 71 minutes. It was his shot that allowed Weghorst to net his first goal for the club.
Wayne Hennessey could only parry his sharp effort, allowing the striker to poke the ball into the roof of the net. Whether worried about offside or otherwise, Antony produced a very muted reaction to the goal.
Given he appeared to be looking in the direction of the linesman, it is likely he thought the strike might've been disallowed for offside, but he needn't have been concerned.
Ten Hag fumes at Fernandes
Ten Hag was furious with Bruno Fernandes for producing a woeful effort at goal during a shifting build-up move just before the break. The Portugal international - whose new national team boss Roberto Martinez was present at the game - received a tirade of frustrated words from his club manager.
Ten Hag was still venting by the time he had returned to his bench to rue what had been a promising passage with his backroom staff seemingly in agreement.
Henderson's reaction to cancelled Forest strike
A few minutes after Rashford's opener, Forest had seemed to equalise when Sam Surridge squeezed the ball home after sloppy defending from United. However, the hosts' joy was short-lived after VAR - brought into the competition for the first time ever - ruled out the strike.
In the midst of it all, United-loaned Dean Henderson had to be restrained by his dugout. He was injured for the clash but his parent club would not have allowed him to feature against them anyway.
Ten Hag’s class act
Ten Hag has evidenced he is a man of principles in many senses and he showed his class just before kick-off once again. The ground held a minute’s silence in commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day.
The manager was very attentive to this pre-match and quickly gestured to those on the bench who had sat down to stand up for the moment of respect. Of course, fans would expect many managers to do this but his promptness to do it before the tannoy announced what was about to happen showed he leads in more ways than one.
