Antony gets Erik ten Hag death stare as Manchester United star hooked after showboating fail

Erik ten Hag hooked Manchester United star Antony at half-time after the winger's "ridiculous" showboating against FC Sheriff.

The Brazilian winger drew the ire of pundits Robbie Savage and Paul Scholes after he indulged in a trademark spin with the Europa League clash goalless - before passing the ball straight out of play. The former Ajax attacker regularly breaks out the party trick but his timing on this occasion was questionable, with the incident drawing somewhat of a death stare from Ten Hag on the Old Trafford bench.

Antony received the ball near the right touchline and when faced with Sheriff's Rasheed Akanbi, opted to spin with the ball 720 degrees on the spot before overhitting a pass to the advancing Casemiro. Diogo Dalot headed in the opening goal just before half-time to somewhat spare his team-mate's blushes. But the 22-year-old did not emerge for the second-half as he was subbed in favour of Marcus Rashford.

Co-commentator Robbie Savage had earlier called for Ten Hag to haul Antony off and while it's unclear whether his withdrawal was purely down to the embarrassing mishap, the optics weren't great for the South American as he failed to re-emerge for the second period.

In the BT Sport studio at half-time, United legend Scholes admitted he was baffled by the bizarre moment and reckons Antony needs to cut it out of his game. "If I was (Akanbi), I know what I'd be doing... I don't know what he's doing, it's just ridiculous.

"It's just showboating, what's he thinking? He's not beating a man, he's not entertaining anybody. It's 0-0 and he kicks the ball out.

"But that's the way he plays, I've seen him do it many a time at Ajax, as well. That's just the way he is but I think he needs that knocking out of him."
