Antony can debunk honeymoon period theory by keeping Manchester United promise this week

Antony has had a successful start to life at Manchester United, scoring in all three of his Premier League games.

The winger has not been fazed by his £85m fee, finding the net against tough opposition in Arsenal, Manchester City and Everton. And while he is yet to find the net in Europe for the Reds, he has been a live-wire in all four of his outings.

He has quickly endeared himself to the United faithful with his eagerness to take on defenders and push forward at every opportunity. When he first arrived at Old Trafford, he vowed to give his all for the team.

"They [the fans] can expect a lot of desire, dedication and fight from me, I always play with a lot of heart,” he said. “I will always honour the fans with desire, fire in my belly, and full of heart.

“They can be rest assured that all the effort and challenges for me to be here will have been worth it."

So far he has kept that promise.

The attacker can confirm himself as Erik ten Hag’s best signing so far with equally positive displays over the next week. United face Newcastle on Sunday before clashes with Tottenham and Chelsea.

The Magpies are unbeaten in four games having netted nine in their last two fixtures, while the other two sit inside the top four. How United perform against all three sides will reflect their chances of qualifying for next year’s Champions League.

Antony can show he can be the difference-maker once again in these fixtures and prove he can fire his side to Champions League qualification. To succeed, he must show “a lot of desire, dedication and fight” and continue to cause havoc among defenders.

This will get tougher in time as teams try to work out his game plan and onlookers often suggest new imports play better when they first arrive due to the opposition’s lack of knowledge of their style of play. His impact in his outings so far may already cause teams to mark him tightly.

But Antony can show more of his credentials by outwitting his opponents and endangering their box again, and thus showing that his great start to his United tenure is no honeymoon period.
