Antonio Rudiger's opinion on Man Utd transfer and what it means for Harry Maguire

Antonio Rudiger is understood to have no interest in joining Manchester United this summer, despite being set to leave Chelsea.

The German defender is currently considering his options, having chosen not to sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge. The Blues are unable to offer Rudiger a new deal under their current licence from the government as part of the sanctions against owner Roman Abramovich.

Rudiger has been linked with a move to United as a result, as well as various other clubs including Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. And it seems he may be destined to leave the Premier League if he is to depart from west London.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United and Rudiger's representatives have held discussions about a free transfer in a few months time. However, it appears that the Germany international is hesitant about joining the Old Trafford side as they are not guaranteed Champions League football every season.

United did qualify for this season's competition but went out in the Round of 16, while they remain outsiders to finish in the top four and secure their place in next year's group stage.

Rudiger appeared to offer some hope to Chelsea fans when asked by The Athletic what it will take for him to stay. He said: “I feel great here, I have always said it. I think the way I play you can see that I’m happy here. But there are also other people who have to make decisions.”

The news may well be a welcome relief to United captain Harry Maguire, who has come under heavy fire for some dismal form this season. Despite being made the world's most expensive defender, the Englishman continues to struggle at club level. There is a concern that Maguire will be stripped of the captaincy if Erik ten Hag takes over, the MEN add.

United have conceded 44 goals in the Premier League this season, already matching their total from last term, and are in danger of surpassing their worst total for 40 years. That is despite also bringing in Raphael Varane from Real Madrid for £41m, with injuries meaning Victor Lindelof has started more league games than the Frenchman.
