Antonio Conte breaks silence on Russia-Ukraine conflict and 'incredible yet stupid' situation

Antonio Conte has given his verdict on the harrowing situation that is currently taking place in Ukraine.

Russia and Ukraine are at war after Vladimir Putin began the invasion of their neighbours some days ago.

The war that has begun has already taken the lives of many people, with thousands of others trying to flee and escape the conflict.

Football seems irrelevant in situations like this with lives being lost, people being scared for their lives and no current end in sight.

Football clubs up and down the country have been showing solidarity to Ukraine, with various teams walking onto the pitch with their distinctive blue and yellow flag to show their support.

The FA have also confirmed that England will not play Russia - at any level of the game - for the foreseeable future.

In his pre-match press conference ahead of Tottenham's FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough, Conte was asked about his thoughts on the war.

"My opinion is that it's a very sad situation," he admitted. "We are in 2022 and to talk about the possibility about being at war is incredible. It's incredible and at the same time it's stupid. Only to think about this.

"We need to have peace in the world, not people to die for this type of situation that I repeat is incredible in 2022 to have a war.

"War is not the answer for anything. The world has to be compact and show solidarity against stupid people," Conte added.

"War is not an answer for anything. Never, never. This must be very clear.

"Football also, Uefa and FIFA has to be compact and to be strong. Also against country who at this moment they don’t want to stay, to show unity."
