Antonio Colak's transfer to Rangers came as a huge boost to Croatian side Rijeka after they landed a £400,000 windfall from the deal.
The Croatian international completed a £2 million move from Greek side PAOK as Rangers made their first major foray into the transfer market this summer. And the 28-year-old's transfer has earned one of his former clubs a financial boost too because Rijeka received around £400,000 from the fee after negotiating a sell-on clause in the deal when PAOK splashed out £2.5 million to sign him two years ago.
Colak was a huge success at Rijeka after he signed from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim permanently in 2019 after a successful loan spell at the club. He was the Croatian league's top scorer with 20 goals in 2020 and he helped Rijeka win two Croatian Cups and his form earned him a call-up for the World Cup runners-up, where he won three caps without scoring for his country.
PAOK snapped him up with Brazilian boss Abel Ferreira forking out the hefty fee for Colak, who was later sent on loan to Malmo where he scored against Rangers in the Champions League qualifiers. And Rijeka have landed a welcome bonus for Colak's goal glut at their club.
Colak could be joined at Ibrox by another new arrival in a matter of days. Tom Lawrence is a free agent after leaving relegated derby county, and Rangers have reportedly won the race to sign him ahead of numerous English Championship clubs.
Sheffield United were contenders, but it's understood that Lawrence has snubbed Paul Heckingbottom's side in favour of a move to the Scottish Cup winners. Extra bodies up front are coming at a good time for Giovanni van Bronckhorst after Kemar Roofe was left at home.
The Jamaican picked up an injury prior to the squad's trip to Portugal for a pre-season training camp. He's remained in Glasgow to be assessed but could miss the Scottish Premiership season opener away to Livingston on Saturday, July 30.
