Anti-racism campaigners to rally in Glasgow as far-right attacks on refugees heighten

Activists, campaigners and members of the public will gather in Glasgow next month as they make a stand against racism.

The group - who are fighting against bigotry - will gather outside George Square at around 11am on Saturday, March 18.

They will then march around the city centre before anti-racism speakers take to the microphone during a rally.

Stand Up to Racism (SUTR) has organised a series of protests, which are also taking place in London and Cardiff.

The protests come as the group say there's been a rise in racially motivated attacks by the far-right, including far-right protesters clashing with police at a hotel housing asylum seekers in Merseyside.

Hector Sierra is originally from Spain but moved to Glasgow four years ago, after relocating from England.

The 29-year-old, who is part of SUTR, told Glasgow Live: "We are seeing a rise in activity by the far-right against refugees and asylum seekers like the concerning events in Merseyside.

"It’s important that anti-racists show that we are a majority in this society. We want to see big numbers of people on the streets.

"If there are big numbers on the streets, it would give the courage and confidence to people to call out incidents of racism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism or bigotry that they see.

The demonstration has three demands, which include calling for refugees to be made welcome and have a safe passage to enter the country, demanding justice for Sheku Bayoh who died after being restrained by police in Kirkcaldy in 2015, and uniting Glaswegians.

Hector added: "The threat of the far right and racist attacks is real and it’s important that everybody stands in solidarity with all those facing racist attacks. We want this to be a society that’s welcoming and supportive.

"It’s encouraging that the demonstration has backing from across the trade union movement."
