General Election petition boosted by 'fascist cranks', warn Greens

A PETITION calling on Keir Starmer to call another General Election is being promoted by “far-right conspiracy theorists, racists and people like Elon Musk”, according to an MSP.

Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie criticised Labour but warned that “wannabe fascist cranks are the last people they should listen to”.

The petition, which accuses Labour of breaking promises they made before the election, has been signed by more than two million people.

Speaking on ITV’s This Morning on Monday, Starmer brushed off calls for another election.

The Prime Minister said: “I remind myself that very many people didn’t vote Labour at the last election. I’m not surprised that many of them want a re-run, that isn’t how our system works.”

The petition has been shared by Musk (above), the owner of Twitter/X, who has previously been accused of allowing far-right conspiracy theories to flourish on the social media platform.

Harvie told The National: “The Labour Government has seemed determined to disappoint people very quickly.

"Since coming to power, Keir Starmer has continued some of the worst decisions of the Tory austerity that came before him.

“Labour has chosen to plunge pensioners into poverty, undermine public services even further and provided support to a genocidal government in Israel. Scotland deserves much better.”

But the former minister warned against putting stock in the petition, adding: “The UK Government must be put under pressure to provide the progressive, forward looking leadership the country needs and to invest in public services, climate action and more.

“But wannabe fascist cranks are the last people they should listen to.”
