My friend Anthony J Lester, who has died aged 80, was an art critic and journalist, who wrote for many publications and became known as a lecturer on art and antiques.
His interest was sparked in childhood. At 11 years old, he bought at auction a box of “sundry pictures” for a maiden bid of five shillings. Among them was a painting by the Scottish landscape artist William McTaggart, and this inspired Tony’s love of watercolours.
