Anthony Richardson Had Unexpected Reaction to Being Named Colts Starting QB

The Colts announced on Tuesday that rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson will start in the team’s Week 1 game vs. the Jaguars.

While fans weren’t too surprised that Richardson would get the start over Gardner Minshew, the quarterback himself couldn’t believe the news when he heard it.

“Honestly, I was shocked,” Richardson said, per WISH-TV. “I’ve been grinding, putting in the work to try to get the title, but it’s not really all about the title. I’m just trying to make sure I’m ready for the team, despite being labeled as QB1, I’ve still got other guys in that room helping me to get to that standard. I’m forever thankful for them.”

The No. 4 pick in this year’s NFL draft did start Saturday’s preseason game vs. the Bills, in which he went 7-for-12 on pass attempts for 67 yards and one touchdown.

After just the one start under his belt, Richardson admitted he feels more ready, but can’t be too sure how he feels until the regular season actually starts.

“As of right now, I think I’m ready,” Richardson said, via the Indy Star. “But who am I to say if I’m ready or not?”

Richardson’s official debut will take place on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. ET.
