Anthony Ralston on the Celtic 'extra motivation' factor as Hoops strive to reach higher level

Anthony Ralston insists Ange Postecoglou's drive to push Celtic higher and higher gives the current crop extra motivation to succeed.

The Hoops gaffer has always maintained a desire to strengthen his squad as he bids to increase standards and competition in his ranks. The Aussie boss is determined to remain top dog in Scotland while also making a much bigger impact in the Champions League. This season was all about experience for his squad but he wants to return to Europe's top table next term to make a fist of things.

Celtic and Postecoglou have always strived to get any transfer business done early, with plans for January already well underway with players set to arrive and likely depart the Scottish champions during the winter window. But for Ralston and his team-mates, it is part and parcel of football and it gives them extra motivation to fight for their spot in the team.

He said: “When you are a club of this stature, you are always having to have your A game because there is always going to be someone else coming in, another person wanting to take your position. That’s part and parcel of not just here, but all football.

“You always want to be at the top of your game anyway. You don’t want any reason to drop your game off, so, yes, it’s extra motivation for everyone involved to stay in and that is the way it works.

“We don’t want to just compete domestically. We want to compete in Europe and we want to keep striving to the highest possible point and that is our aim.

“We don’t just want to be a team that is comfortable. We want to be kicking on and we need to do things that have not been done before. That’s our aim and we will continue to do that.”
