For the time being, you can rest assured that GTA 6 is coming in November. I say that because, according to a former Rockstar Games developer, anything is possible, including another delay to the long-awaited crime sandbox.
I know, I know - don't shoot the messenger. But according to Mike York, an animator who worked on Grand Theft Auto 5, if anyone's not completely confident in the next installment, then it could be moved again. "Personally after being there and working on GTA 5, I don't currently work there so I can't give confidence based off that, but based on my previous experience, they could delay it again," he tells Indy100.
"Straight up, they could delay it again," he adds. "They can. They can do whatever they want and people will wait right now, it doesn't matter. If they need to do what they need to do, they'll do it."
Firstly, I would say he's right; people will hang around. They've done 13 years of it; what's another few months? Nobody will be happy about it, but those pre-orders will hold. Secondly, York points to the finishing touches, and how the anticipation is simply too high for anything to go wrong.
"So if November comes around and they're thinking, 'This final mission we have is still not looking very good and there are still a few bugs in this final mission,' they'll push it six more months if they have to," he explains.
"I would not be shocked at all," he finishes. "I don't think it would hurt them or anything."
Probably not, but it would hurt almost every other publisher in the industry, who would then have to shift their release schedules again to avoid whatever the new GTA 6 release date is. As these comments have circulated, York clarified on Twitter he's not predicting anything; he just wants to make sure fans know this could happen.
"Just so we are clear, I don’t think they will delay it again," he writes. "But I also said I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. They really want to release the best game possible even if that means pushing it out farther."
On the back of York's comments, there's a non-zero chance we haven't seen the third trailer yet because Rockstar is making 110% sure November 9 is sticking for the launch. We can only wait and see.
