Annual Leave Hacks 2025: Best Days To Take Off & Give Yourself The Cheeky 9 Day Weekend You Deserve

As Spooky Season is upon us, the biggest scare of the day is the fact that it’s almost 2025. How horrifying. You know what you need to help ignore the unstoppable passage of time? A cheeky holiday using an annual leave hack.

Everyone always wants a holiday. However, because some demon looked at all the beauty in the natural world and decided to invent the five-day work week, taking a holiday is not something you can do.

Instead we are forced to go through the process of booking annual leave with our immediate supervisors, and picking exactly which dates are the best to start a vacation on.

But if you’re a crafty bastard like me, you know that you don’t need to play by rules everyone else does. It’s almost 2025, it’s time for big brain annual leave moves that incorporate as many public holidays as possible for a maximised holiday length.

So before you be boring and take an entire week off next year, here are some public holiday dates to look out for to get yourself as many as 10 days off, while only using three days of leave.

Best annual leave hacks for 2025

Next year in Australia there will be several national public holidays where everyone can utilise the following annual leave hacks to score the most days off. Here’s the seven we’ll cover:

  • Invasion Day — Monday, January 27, 2025
  • Good Friday — Friday, April 18, 2025
  • Easter Monday — Monday, April 21, 2025
  • Anzac Day — Friday, April 25, 2025
  • Christmas Day — Thursday, December 25, 2025
  • Boxing Day — Friday, December 26, 2025
  • New Year’s Eve — Wednesday, December 31, 2025

And with that clarified, let’s get crack-a-lacking.

Invasion Day

It’s Australia’s most culturally tense day on the calendar, but January 27 is also still a public holiday. So if you are booking a trip and want to boost it with an extra day off while saving your limited annual leave, why not take the days around Invasion Day off well.

Utilising this annual leave hack can score you with nine days out of the office, and also the opportunity to travel somewhere that doesn’t celebrate the day it was colonised.

Dates Off: Saturday January 25 — Sunday February 2 (nine days).

Book Annual Leave On: Tuesday 28 — Friday 31 January (four days).

Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Anzac Day

This one is awesome, because by using only three days of leave, three public holidays, and two weekends, you can have one big holiday for 10 whole days. Just as Jesus and the ANZACs intended.

Dates Off: Friday, April 18 — Sunday, April 27 (10 days).

Book Annual Leave On: Tuesday 22 — Thursday 24 April (three days).

Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Years

Again, massive thanks to our Lord and Saviour, capitalism, for this one. In the true spirit of Christmas, the best thing you can do is use this highly spiritual/consumerist time to spend money on a big holiday somewhere and make yourself happy before the year ends, and into 2026.

Dates Off: Saturday, December 20 — Sunday, January 4 (16 days)

Book Annual Leave On: December 22, 23, 24, 29 and 30. January 2, 2026 (six days).

So what are you waiting for? Send that message to whoever oversees leave requests at work, and start fantasising about the time you can set your email to an Out Of Office automated response. Thank you, annual leave hacks.
