Anne Hathaway’s Historic NYC Balcony Is a 2026 Masterpiece – It Is the Most Sophisticated Urban Retreat I Have Ever Discovered

Anne Hathaway.

Creating a covered arbor or pergola that offers privacy, shade, and fragrance is an alluring project for many of us this spring. Actress Anne Hathaway and her husband, jewelry designer Adam Shulman, clearly appreciate this appeal.

Their former balcony garden, nestled within a historic Neo-Georgian property in NYC and landscaped by Jeffrey Erb Landscape Design, remains the terrace idea of my dreams for 2026.

Roof gardens, terraces, and balconies offer a wonderful vantage point for city views. With the right small garden ideas, you can extend your living space outdoors regardless of the square footage. I have always championed the benefits of pergolas and statement patio cover ideas; they feel particularly magical during long summer twilights when adorned with climbing jasmine or twinkly lights. Their effectiveness as a garden screening idea is often underestimated.

Before starting your build, garden designer Charlotte Rowe advises, ‘Only have a pergola or an arbor if you think you absolutely need one. I say this because people often think that they will shelter you from the rain when, in fact, they really don’t, and they are more useful for providing shade from the sun.’

The ideal placement for a pergola depends entirely on your outdoor living room layout and your specific goals. Designer Katrina Kieffer-Wells suggests that pergolas paired with shade sails work beautifully in both sunny and shady spots.

‘If you have a south-facing garden, a partially enclosed pergola can create a tranquil retreat and offer respite on a hot summer’s day,’ she notes. ‘In shade gardens, they can make a cozy night-time feature with the addition of ambient lights and hanging drapes.’

As the weather warms, remember to plant for privacy, especially if you are overlooked by neighboring high-rise apartments. If your rooftop garden is part of a larger 2026 renovation, try building planters along the outer edges of the roof. This allows you to layer taller trees for screening with smaller shrubs and vibrant summer annuals.

Alternatively, faux planters offer immediate color without the maintenance – an excellent choice for a busy lifestyle. Look for designs that can simply be slotted over the top of railings, but always secure your container garden properly to prevent damage during sudden summer storms or high winds.

Dining under a lush canopy shouldn't be reserved for vacations. You can achieve a relaxed lifestyle at home using a temporary structure that is easy to install and remove as the season shifts from summer to the crisp air of fall. From urban plots to vast country estates, we all seek intimacy and charm regardless of our roof garden ideas.

A pergola dressed with a simple shade sail – or even an oversized sun umbrella – is an effortless way to craft an enclosed sanctuary filled with dappled sunlight.
