Anne Hathaway Is Trying to Stop the Return of the 2000s Diet Culture With a Pivotal Move for ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set to arrive later this summer, bringing us back into the world of Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) and Miranda Priestley (Meryl Streep). The original 2006 film became a bonafide hit, living on in sleepovers and in the hearts of many… and now, it sounds like the sequel is about to be modernized in a very pivotal way.

In a recent profile of Hathaway in Harper’s Bazaar, Streep revealed her co-star’s commitment to one specific aspect of the production. With aspects of the real-life fashion industry factoring into the movie, including scenes set during real runway shows at Milan Fashion Week, Hathaway went out of her way to ensure that the film wouldn’t feature “skeletal” body types. Given the recent conversation around diet culture and body dysmorphia, especially in the realm of celebrities, Hathaway’s decision might be arriving at the perfect time.

“I was struck by how not only beautiful and young — everyone seems young to me — but alarmingly thin the models were,” Streep explained. “I thought that all had been addressed years ago. Annie clocked it too, and she made a beeline to the producers about it, securing promises that the models in the show that we were putting together for our film would not be so skeletal! She’s a stand-up girl.”

The director of The Devil Wears Prada 2, David Frankel, also praised Hathaway’s involvement with the film, saying: “[Hathaway] really carried the heavy, heavy load. I mean, she’s in every scene of this movie, so she really had to show up day after day, and she was tireless and uncomplaining and enthusiastic.”

What Is The Devil Wears Prada 2 About?

In The Devil Wears Prada 2, almost twenty years after making their iconic turns as Miranda, Andy, Emily and Nigel—Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci return to the fashionable streets of New York City and the sleek offices of Runway Magazine in the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2006 phenomenon that defined a generation.

The film reunites the original main cast with director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna, and introduces an all-new runway of characters including Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, Pauline Chalamet, B.J. Novak and Conrad Ricamora. Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman also reprise their roles as “Lily” and “Irv” from the first film.

Elsewhere in the Harper’s Bazaar interview, Streep also spoke about the surreal experience of filming the project itself, as fans and paparazzi swarmed the production whenever they were filming in public.

“Even though we were aware of the impact of the first film two decades ago, I think none of us were prepared for the ambush of both goodwill and avid attention that engulfed us,” Streep revealed. “We needed police barriers and crowd control. Buses of fans turned up, and paparazzi swarmed and in one case kept jumping in front of the camera and the shot and got in a kerfuffle with crew. Annie kept her cool, but I was unnerved.”

The Devil Wears Prada 2 will be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, May 1st.
