Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson Go Black and White at the Verity Premiere in New York

Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson took opposite routes on the red carpet at the New York premiere of Verity on Tuesday, September 29. Hathaway wore black Atelier Prabal Gurung and Johnson wore white Calvin Klein Collection. The screening was held at AMC Lincoln Square 13, three days before Amazon MGM Studios' Colleen Hoover adaptation opens in US theaters on October 2.

Hathaway, who plays the title character, wore a custom Atelier Prabal Gurung gown in black shredded chiffon. The fabric was decorated with floral embroidery and crystal beading, and the neckline was a sweetheart. The skirt was pleated tulle embroidered with sequins and ended in a train. The frayed, textured chiffon on top gave a formal silhouette a darker, slightly gothic edge, which suits a psychological thriller. The dress was also her first major red carpet appearance for the film, since she did not attend the UK screening in London.

Johnson, who plays struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, chose a lighter and more revealing look. Her custom Calvin Klein Collection outfit paired a white iridescent sequin-embroidered top that bared the midriff with a matching high-slit column skirt. Crystal fringe cascaded in a waterfall effect, so the look moved with every step on the carpet. She finished it with matching square-toe leather sandals, which kept the focus on the shimmer.

The two outfits make a clear pairing. It is tempting to read the black-and-white contrast as a nod to a story about two women with very different versions of the truth, but that is an editorial interpretation and neither star has said it was intentional. The contrast does fit the film's tone. Johnson told Extra that Hathaway described her look as a "sexy icicle," a comment that points to the playful rapport the two seem to share on the press tour.

Johnson's New York dress also came after a very different premiere look. At the UK screening in London, she wore a sheer ivory French lace dress by New York designer Colleen Allen over Fleur du Mal lingerie, styled by Kate Young, according to Who What Wear. Two premieres, two distinct approaches: the London look was about transparency and the New York look was about light and motion. For anyone following Johnson's red carpet choices, the Calvin Klein piece is a more polished, sparkle-driven step in the same daring direction.

Hathaway and Johnson were joined by co-star Josh Hartnett, director Michael Showalter and author Colleen Hoover. The press tour has been a steady source of red carpet fashion, and the two actresses' contrasting New York looks will likely be the most-discussed pair of the run. Verity follows Lowen as she is hired to complete a bestselling series by Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway, and finds herself questioning what is real inside the Crawford home. Josh Hartnett plays Verity's husband, Jeremy.

With the film arriving in theaters this week, the New York carpet reads as a final styling statement before audiences see the story. In black and white, Hathaway and Johnson delivered two distinct versions of premiere glamour.
