AnnaLynne McCord said she ‘could have been a dictator’ as she defended her bizarre viral Vladimir Putin poem.
The former 90210 actress took to social media on Thursday, sharing a video of her reading a poem addressed to the Russian president, as she tried to imagine being his mother.
“Dear President Vladimir Putin, I'm so sorry that I was not your mother,” AnnaLynne began.
“If I was your mother, you would have been so loved, held in the arms of joyous light. Never would this story's plight, the world unfurled before our eyes,” she continued.
“If I was your mother, the world would have been warm. So much laughter and joy, and nothing would harm,” the 34-year-old read.
AnnaLynne was mocked and criticised for choosing to upload her video on the same day Russian soldiers began to invade Ukraine, but she fired back at the mean comments, as she confessed she could’ve ended up like Putin.
“I know how I could easily have moved in the direction of becoming a dictator myself,” she told BuzzFeed News.
“If certain circumstances of my life were different, were I a little less bent toward healing and more toward vindication, I could have been a darkly powerful person,” AnnaLynne added.
She said she wanted to share the poem after waking up “in anguish [over] the children of war.”
AnnaLynne tried to imagine herself as Putin’s mother to try and raise awareness of “early life trauma” and the changes needed to “protect children and stop creating dictators and abusers and enslavers and rapists and bullies”.
She said she empathises with “children who grow into adults and become people who do historically horrifying things”, and hopes her poem can begin to make a difference.
AnnaLynne was mercilessly mocked on Twitter after sharing the video, in which she states: “If I was your mother, if the world was cold, I’d have died to make you warm. I’d have died to give you life.”
She also laments being born “too late” to be Putin’s mother.
“THIS WILL DEFINITELY STOP HIM!! YOU ARE SO STRONG AND BRAVE ANNALYNNE MCCORD,” one joked.
“Was going to do a dance to stop Putin but I think this 90210 actress nailed it,” another added.
“This is worse than making a petition,” one quipped.
