Wintour made the comments while attending "Roger Federer: An Icon Returns to New York," the exhibition event at the US Open honoring the retired champion, where she also took part in the ceremonial coin toss. Asked about the relationship between sports and fashion, she pointed first to established examples. She noted that players like Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka have long used their on-court wardrobes as a form of self-expression, then turned to Eala specifically, remarking on how visibly interested the young player is in fashion and in learning more about the industry. Wintour summarized the shift simply, calling the connection between the two worlds "a wonderful sort of marriage."
