Anna Wintour poses with Devil Wears Prada double Meryl Streep as she addresses Miranda Priestly similarities

The Devil Wear Prada fans have been left seeing double as Anna Wintour poses with star Meryl Streep – who plays a character famously based on the ex magazine editor.

In a new interview, Wintour discussed exactly what it’s like to be played by Meryl Streep in the films, insisting that fictional Runway editor Miranda Priestly is “distant” from her real personality.

The Devil Wears Prada 2, coming out next month, will feature Streep in the role of Miranda again, having played her in the first film in 2006. The film is based on the novel by Wintour’s former assistant Lauren Weisberger, with the powerful yet icy Miranda said to be inspired by ex Vogue editor Wintour.

Speaking to Vogue, Wintour addressed Streep’s performance in the role of Priestly, editor-in-chief of fictional fashion magazine, Runway.

“First of all,” Wintour said. “I’d like to say it’s such an honour to be played by Meryl, however distant Miranda is from myself. Who wouldn’t think that that wasn’t the most extraordinary gift?”

Wintour previously spoke out about her thoughts on Miranda Priestly in an interview with the New Yorker in September last year, revealing that she turned up to movie’s 2006 premiere in Prada, with “no idea what the film was going to be about”.

“And I think that the fashion industry were very sweetly concerned for me about the film that it was gonna paint me in some kind of difficult light,” she said, adding that the character is “a caricature” of herself.

Overall, Wintour described the first film as “highly enjoyable” and “very funny”. She said: “Miuccia [Prada] and I talk about it a lot, and I say to her: ‘Well, it was really good for you.”––

The Devil Wears Prada 2 will arrive in UK cinemas on 1 May 2026. Fans of the first film can expect stars Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci to all return for the second. While the 2006 classic followed Andy (Anne Hathaway) as she clumsily navigated her way through her role as a junior assistant, the second film’s plot has been kept under wraps – even Wintour doesn’t know.

But, from the trailer, fans predict the sequel will take place amid the decline of the magazine industry and will follow Priestley in a high-profile scandal.
