Ann Widdecombe’s death ‘not politically motivated’ as police question suspect

  • Detectives investigating the alleged murder of former MP and MEP Ann Widdecombe say there is “nothing to suggest it was politically motivated”, adding that they are “not looking for anyone else” in connection with her death.
  • Devon and Cornwall Police said shortly after 9pm on Saturday, 11 July, a 28-year-old white British man was arrested at an address in Rotherham on suspicion of the murder of Ms Widdecombe.
  • Detectives remain open minded regarding possible motives for murder - so we are still not clear what happened or why.
  • Matt Longman, an assistant chief constable, reiterates the importance of not speculating about motive, particularly online, as it could interfere with the investigation or distress the family, stating: “We understand that there is a huge appetite for information, but progressing and protecting the integrity of our investigation is paramount now. We recognise that there is still some way to go in this case and the release of any information will be a decision made on an operational basis.”
  • Devon and Cornwall Police also thanked the public for some 120 pieces of information volunteered in recent days.
