Kent Melton was a pivotal figure in the animation industry.

Kent Melton, the renowned animation sculptor known for creating clay maquettes for beloved characters in iconic movies, has passed away at the age of 68. Melton, who succumbed to Lewy body dementia at his residence in Stone County, Missouri, was a pivotal figure in the animation industry.

His contributions spanned across various Disney classics such as Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, and The Incredibles, as well as projects with Laika Studios, where he played a significant role in the realm of stop-motion animation.

Working with clay, Melton brought two-dimensional drawings to life in three-dimensional form, a skill that set him apart in an era dominated by digital techniques. His work on Aladdin marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with Disney, leading to his involvement in a string of animated hits throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

Transitioning to Laika Studios, Melton continued to showcase his talent by sculpting characters for acclaimed films like Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls. His meticulous approach to creating maquettes, or small-scale models, allowed animators to capture the essence and personality of each character before translating them into larger productions.

Despite not having formal art education, Melton's innate talent and passion for sculpting propelled him into the industry. His journey from carving wood at an amusement park to becoming a sought-after sculptor for major animation studios is a testament to his dedication and artistic vision.

Reflecting on his craft, Melton emphasized the importance of engaging with the medium and allowing the creative process to guide his work. His ability to breathe life into inanimate clay figures and translate them onto the big screen left a lasting impact on the world of animation.

Survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, Kent Melton leaves behind a legacy of artistry and innovation that will continue to inspire future generations of animators and artists.
