Animal Rising protestors fail in bid to stop Ayr's Scottish Grand National as police swoop

A group of protestors bidding to stop the Scottish Grand National have been thwarted by police this afternoon.

More than 20 people attempted to gain access to the track at Ayr before the big race which was won by Kitty's Light.

The protest group Animal Rising was behind the stunt - just a week on from attempting to halt the Grand National at Aintree.

Seven days ago their protest managed to hold up the start of the race when protestors gained access to the track, however police quickly pevented a similar scenario at Ayr today.

Posting on Twitter, Animal Rising said: "25 supporters of Animal Rising have made it onto the track at the Scottish Grand National, to put their bodies in the way of harm, and protect animals.

"They're attempting to attach themselves to jumps and gates in order to cancel the big race."

Their posted added that "last week at Aintree was just the beginning. The Summer of Animal Rising is upon us."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers are responding to a protest which is ongoing at Ayr Racecourse this afternoon.

"A significant operation is underway to safely remove those involved. A number of arrests have been made and an increased police presence remains at the scene."
