"Pokémon" is the first game that comes to mind when monster collection plays into the scene. There's no doubt that many similar games have appeared in recent years, but nothing has come close to the popular franchise.
"Aniimo" is one of the latest games entering the space. It features creature collecting, real-time battles, exploration, puzzles, and customization.
Some testers tried the game before the launch. They discovered that it had plenty of potential. It still needs more time to reveal how well its systems come together.
For now, though, its early experience already gives it a personality beyond its obvious "Pokémon" comparisons.
'Aniimo' Puts Exploration at the Center
The similarities to Pokémon are easy to notice. Players explore a large open world while searching for creatures known as "Aniimo."
Each creature has its own elemental attributes, abilities, and stats. Players can capture them, train them, and use them in battles.
There is also more to consider when collecting Aniimo. Their personalities can influence their potential. This gives players a reason to look beyond simply finding one creature of each type.
However, collecting is only part of the experience. Exploration is arguably where "Aniimo" makes its strongest impression.
Real-Time Combat Keeps Battles Moving
Unlike classic "Pokémon" games, "Aniimo" does not use traditional turn-based combat.
Battles happen in real time. Each "Aniimo" has several abilities, along with the potential to use an ultimate attack.
The game's Twining system allows players to directly control their Aniimo during fights. This keeps combat moving and makes encounters feel more active.
The system is easy to understand. It also works well for casual battles.
Players expecting the strategic depth of Pokémon's battle system may want more, however. Combat is enjoyable, but it does not appear to be Aniimo's defining feature.
Puzzles Give 'Aniimo' More Reasons to Explore
The world itself gives players plenty of reasons to keep moving.
"Aniimo" features puzzles, hidden areas, chests, and resources scattered throughout its environments. Some creatures can also interact with the world in useful ways.
The Twining system is important here, Noah Kupetsky of Steam Deck HQ writes in his opinion piece.
A Fire-elemental Flameruff, for example, can burn through vines blocking certain areas. A lightweight Celestis can fly toward higher locations.
These abilities make creature selection matter outside of combat. The "Aniimo" in a player's collection can determine how they approach certain environmental challenges.
Build and Customize Your Own Space
Exploration is not the only activity available. "Aniimo" also gives players a personal space that they can build and decorate.
Here, players can take a break from exploring and battling while working on their own space.
Resources and chests can also be found throughout the world. The currencies collected can be used to train Aniimo or obtain cosmetic items.
So far, the experience tested did not include gacha mechanics. This makes progression feel relatively straightforward.
'Aniimo' Steam Deck Support Is Still Unclear
Steam Deck players may have to wait for more details about compatibility.
The PC version tested before launch used a standalone launcher. The launcher could not recognize the available storage space on the test device.
Because of that issue, Steam Deck performance could not be tested directly.
"Aniimo" is confirmed to launch on Steam. The developers also believe it should be playable on Steam Deck with appropriate graphics settings. However, official Steam Deck support is not currently a major development priority.
According to MMOS, the Advanced Edition pack will cost about $10, while the Collector's Edition pack will sit at $19.99.
