Grammy Award-winning musician Ani DiFranco has taken on a new role on Broadway, portraying the Greek goddess Persephone in the Tony-winning musical Hadestown. DiFranco, known for her indie singer/songwriter career, joined the show alongside Lola Tung on Feb. 9.
Having collaborated with Hadestown creator Anaïs Mitchell on the music for the show's concept album in 2010, DiFranco describes Hadestown as a remarkable piece of writing and theater. She views her Broadway debut as a valuable learning experience, especially as she embarks on her own theater project.
DiFranco's decision to venture into musical theater was driven by her desire to try something entirely new and challenging. Despite her mother's reassurance that her performance background would suffice, DiFranco acknowledges the unique demands of Broadway as a fulfilling challenge that has exceeded her expectations.
Hadestown is a retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, with DiFranco's character Persephone playing a pivotal role in the couple's journey. While Tung will only be part of the production until March 17, DiFranco plans to continue her role in Hadestown until June.
Following her Broadway stint, DiFranco will spend time in Canada with her family before releasing a children's book titled Show Up and Vote in August. Despite missing her loved ones back home in New Orleans, DiFranco appreciates the experience of being in New York and the challenges it has brought.
