Angus Kinnear opens up on Jesse Marsch's exit and Leeds United's ‘collective failure’

Angus Kinnear has opened up on the “collective failure” at Leeds United which saw Jesse Marsch dismissed from his post as head coach on Monday. The American arrived as a relative unknown to English football following stints at Red Bull franchises Salzburg and Leipzig.

His philosophy was dubbed as a continuation of Marcelo Bielsa’s work but, unlike the popular Argentine, Marsch did not receive universal adulation when leaving Elland Road. A disastrous run of two wins from 18 league fixtures sounded a death knell for the 49-year-old.

The final straw for Andrea Radrizzani came at Nottingham Forest last weekend when, despite boasting 70 percent possession and almost twice as many shots, Leeds lost 1-0. Youth coach Michael Skubala was temporarily tasked with fronting a three-man setup for the double-header against Manchester United.

Writing in his programme notes, managing director Kinnear discussed the “painful” decision to sack Marsch and the lack of 'progression' during the 49-year-old's time at the club.

“The week was challenging for everyone at the club,” Kinnear wrote. “Parting ways with Jesse Marsch, a man who has given us absolutely everything to be successful on the pitch, was painful.

“This is not just from a human level, but because the departure of a head coach is a sign of collective failure from everyone in the boardroom and on the playing side. Ultimately, while the work at Thorp Arch was always diligent and considered, it was not translating into results on the pitch.

“Almost as important, it was also not demonstrating sufficient progression over time. Everyone at the club thanks Jesse and his team for their commitment and wishes them the best for their next coaching endeavours.”
