Angus Beaumont's mother angry at jail sentence handed to his murderers

The mother of a 15-year-old boy stabbed to death by two teenagers says their jail sentences are a "joke".

The pair, now aged 16 and 17, and who cannot be named under youth justice laws, were found guilty of the murder of Angus Beaumont by a Supreme Court jury earlier this year.

During a sentencing hearing on Tuesday, the court heard he died after being stabbed in the chest by the younger teen during a "knife fight" between two groups in Redcliffe in March 2020.

The court heard the stabbing happened shortly after the two boys had attempted to rob one of Angus's friends, who they had just purchased cannabis from.

Angus armed himself with knuckle dusters and a knife before becoming involved in an altercation with the pair which "lasted only a matter of seconds" before he was killed, the court heard.

CCTV footage, which was played during the trial, showed the two boys high-fiving each other after the stabbing, "in a gesture of having won the fight", before they both fled the area.

The court heard the pair had lengthy violent criminal histories, one had been on bail at the time of the killing while the other was on probation, and both went on to commit further offences while on bail for the murder.

Justice David Jackson handed down separate sentences for the pair based on their differing roles in the crime.

The 16-year-old boy, who inflicted the fatal wound, was jailed for nine years.

Justice Jackson found the older teen's conduct was "less culpable" and he was sentenced to seven and a half years.

The boys will be free from jail after serving less than two-thirds of their respective sentences.

Both have already spent more than 18 months in pre-sentence custody and will only have to serve 60 per cent of their terms, after their actual jail time was decreased due to "special circumstances".

'Fractured' childhoods no excuse, says mother

Justice Jackson told the court when determining their punishments, he had to take into consideration several factors including their young age, prejudicial and "fractured" childhood's, their mental health, and drug exposure and use from an early age.

Outside court Angus Beaumont's mother Michelle Liddle called the penalties a "joke".

"I'm so angry," she said.

"All these things they take into account for these boys aren't excuses to kill someone.

"There's lots of kids that are in abusive situations that don't go on to harm others.

"Those kids don't have to do that, they don't have to take somebody else's life."

Ms Liddle said the youth justice laws were "failing" victims and their families.

"It's got to change … This is just so wrong," she said.

"These kids are playing these courts, or these courts are just not taking into account the victims' lives."

Whilst speaking after the verdict, a supporter of one the boys approached the family, before being moved on by security.

Ms Liddle said it was clear the teens responsible held "no remorse".

"They have mocked us, they have laughed about our son's death … they do not care," she said.
