Pictures show plastic bottles dumped on the floor at Leeds Bradford Airport across from a sign which promises the airport will be greener.
Helen Stowell was travelling from the Yeadon airport on Thursday (May 26) for a trip to Warsaw, Poland. After checking in and heading toward security she noticed the mess.
Plastic water bottles, coffee cups, McDonald's cups and other rubbish items, were left scattered before individuals headed through security. "There's got to be a better way of managing bottles and liquids through security so we don't end up seeing so many discarded," Helen said.

"Plastic bottles piled up on floor of Leeds Bradford Airport across from the promise sign to be net carbon zero by 2030. Others have told me that there are water points after security so we just need the option to empty liquids beforehand."
The passenger noticed the issue after Leeds Bradford bosses promised to make the airport one of the first net-zero airports in the UK by 2030. The airport said it wants to focus on emissions that the airport is directly responsible for and is fully in control of, including decarbonising intensive terminal operations across the 260,000 sq ft airport, such as renewable heating contracts, energy-efficient air-conditioning, as well as converting on-site vehicles to low and zero-emission solutions.
Vincent Hodder, CEO of Leeds Bradford Airport, previously explained the airport's green ambitions: “This net-zero commitment is one of the most ambitious made by a UK airport and we hope it will reassure passengers, partners and members of the public that we are planning for the long-term future of LBA.
"Of course, emissions from aircraft are a concern across the aviation industry and we do not deny that or ignore it, but we are clear in our role to provide appropriate infrastructure and incentives to support the wider decarbonisation efforts of our partners and supply chain, as well as advocating for technological advances."
In a tweet to the airport, passenger Helen said: "Hey @LBIA so what about installing a liquid emptying point pre-security & then water refilling stations after? #netzero commitments at odds with this #plasticpollution ?"
@DannySmallman said: "There is a water refilling station. It’s on the stairwell near the smoking area. Used it on the way out last week." Helen added: "That’s half the problem solved then. Surely empty bottles could be taken through security? Just need to be able to drain any fluids before going through?"
LBA was "absolute carnage" this morning after the airport had to be evacuated due to a fire alarm. Passengers heading to the airport for early morning flights have been experiencing delays getting through security for a number of weeks.
Leeds Live have contacted Leeds Bradford Airport for comment.
