Another superb performance on the Leeds Liverpool Canal last weekend saw Huyton’s in-form Paul Holding take another important win.
Competing in the Liverpool & District AA Teams of Three League, Holding continued with his impressive run this year on the back of a section win he took on the Wigan lengths of the canal on Saturday.
On the team front however, Sunday’s performance saw him fishing under the Liverpool AS Black team banner and pegged on the first peg of the match on the ‘old drums’ length at Lydiate, Holding modestly took full advantage of it to pull off a notable top performance for yet another match win.
As many experienced users will know, ‘our cut’ as it’s affectionately known, is extremely moody at present and although some excellent catches are being notably recorded in parts, given the elements, boat traffic and general disturbance, in all it can be very difficult at times.

Here on Sunday however, Holding targeted lines both long and short with a caster and worm approach from the off and although ‘boated’ –seeing his far line demolished after taking a couple of skimmers – he topped up his six metre with plenty of chopped worm and the tactic worked perfectly.
Feeding again late on, a bonus 3lb bream and a 2lb tench in the last half hour saw those fish boost his total weight to 11.10 for the win.
Taking a well-deserved creditable second place was Maghull’s Mike Dickson. Again using his own favoured approach, Dickson – who is match secretary of the L&DAA and upholds a reputation for running a superb competition – he fished worm for a mixed bag of bream, tench, eels and perch for a close 11.7.0 from the ’duck’s’ length.
Matrix Leigh T&B led the team scoreline with a cracking nine points. LAS Green took second and Dicko’s Danglers took a creditable 11 points for third place.
On the junior scene, St Helens AA junior coach Paul Lucas held another fantastic coaching session on the St Helens Canal on Sunday. For the second week running, Paul has had 18 young anglers attending all hoping to learn and enjoy the art of fishing.
On the club scene, Maghull & Lydiate AC took a trip over to Orcheton Farm Fisheries near Wrightington last Sunday.
Ted Kane took the top honours on the day with fantastic 95.7.0 and also banked the days ‘golden peg’ money on doing so. James Doran took second place with a creditable 78.3.0 and Mike Sheard 56.4.0 took third.
Over with the Alliance AC, Lydiate’s Colin Pellow took the top spot with a 73.12.0 catch that saw off reigning club champion Kevin Bradshaw’s 66.4.0 and his brother Dave’s third placed 55.13.0.
At Downholland’s Mistral Lake on Sunday, this one saw a tremendous 130lb by Luke Haskayne (Ray’s tackle) take the honours. Wigan’s Gary Taylor took 112.4.0 for second.
