A debate over religious freedom has erupted after former banking executive Andrew Thorburn's reign as Essendon AFL chief executive lasted just 24 hours.

The Bombers accepted Mr Thorburn's resignation on Tuesday amid backlash over his role as chairman of the Melbourne-based City on a Hill church.
