Anger as unexpected roadworks causing a 'kerfuffle' near Phoenix Park

Residents have spoken out in anger and confusion as they claim that nearby roadworks are causing major disruptions. People are saying that the roadworks, on the A610 road near businesses , are adding as much as half an hour to journey times, as well as causing headaches for businesses and making people late for work.

Residents have also claimed that the roadworks came out of nowhere, with no warning being issued before they began to be carried out.

Nicole Cole, 26, a care worker who lives nearby, said: "It’s been there for a while - everyone I’ve spoken to says it adds an half an hour to everyone's journey. This is a major road that everyone used to get into the city and every time we have left we have not seen a single road worker. It’s causing a massive issue.

“If they were doing work it wouldn't be an issue but no one has seen a single worker - I would understand if the work was being done. There was no warning, this has just appeared out of nowhere and it’s causing a kerfuffle.

“No one knows what’s being done or why it’s being done, as you can imagine it’s quite frustrating. It causes a lot of issues for people getting to work and deliveries “If we had an explanation it would be fine but we have had nothing - they’re just putting more and more cones on there.”

25-year-old Chelsea Bradbury, who works as a nursery manager at Kidz Kaboom in Phoenix Park, said: “It's when we are coming in the morning. They blocked off the entry to come into Phoenix Park.

“It's just a nightmare coming in, in the morning. It’s in the morning and the evening. Someone that comes in on the bus normally takes her 20 minutes but it took her an hour to get here - it’s been chaotic.”

David Robertson, owner of Clip and Climb Nottingham on the industrial estate, said: "It always is a busy road to be honest - the road works have made it worse. It has caused a bit of trouble with customers.

“The slip road was blocked and there was nothing to tell people. It wasn't sign posted and no diversion - it was bad road signage. I imagine people had problems.”

Sukhnam Sidku, 30, works in IT at the Phoenix Park industrial estate, added: "Quite a few people have been getting late into work recently due to the roadworks. Quite a few people are frustrated. I’m not sure what they’re doing - they made it so you have to go all the way around the roundabout which adds 5 minutes.

“For people who are getting in from afar it would be a bit of a nightmare.”

A City Council spokesperson said: “We are carrying out works to improve bus priority on this stretch of the A610, which we expect to complete later this week or early next week. With any roadworks there’s always likely to be some disruption to normal traffic flows, but we do all we can to minimise this - such as suspending work and traffic management arrangements over the bank holiday.

"However, the traffic management was put back in place earlier than scheduled this morning and we apologise for the impact this may have had on people’s journeys. A great deal of work laying new traffic signal ducting has already been carried out, but it has taken longer than expected, causing greater disruption. We will take on board comments about making signage clearer.”
