Angela Rayner makes new move in bid for political comeback

  • Angela Rayner, the former deputy prime minister, is preparing to launch a podcast titled "Beyond the Bubble" as part of efforts to broaden her appeal ahead of a potential Labour leadership contest.
  • The podcast, reportedly produced by Global, has seen Ms Rayner interview former Tory cabinet minister Michael Gove for a pilot episode, with the initial focus understood to be on housing.
  • Concerns have been raised among supporters of the prime minister that Ms Rayner will use the platform to continue criticising the current Labour government's direction and policies, following her recent remarks on anti-immigration policies and urging Sir Keir Starmer to "pick more fights".
  • Despite her criticisms and previous resignation over tax affairs, Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed his desire to bring Ms Rayner back into government, stating she has a "leading role" to play and expressing regret over her departure.
  • Ms Rayner's return to frontline politics is contingent on a report from HMRC regarding approximately £30,000 in unpaid stamp duty, while bookmakers currently position her as the favourite to succeed Sir Keir amidst projections of significant Labour losses in upcoming local and devolved elections.
