Angel Reese made history in the WNBA on Sunday as she became the single-season rebounding leader with eight games remaining. In a game where the Chicago Sky faced off against the Minnesota Lynx, Reese's impressive performance stood out despite her team's 79-74 loss. She recorded 17 points and a remarkable 19 rebounds, marking her 24th double-double of the season, setting a league rookie record. Reese's total rebounds now stand at 418, averaging an impressive 13.1 per game, surpassing Sylvia Fowles' previous record of 404 set in 2018. Additionally, the 6-foot-3 rookie broke the record for offensive rebounds with 165, surpassing the previous record held by Yolanda Griffiths.
Reese's standout performance this season has solidified her as one of the top players in the league, with only A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces joining her in having at least four games with 15-plus points and 15-plus rebounds. On the opposing side, Courtney Williams led the Lynx with 22 points, tying her season-high in scoring. Kayla McBride contributed 17 points, and Napheesa Collier added 15 points for the Lynx, who improved to a league-best 8-1 record since the Olympic break.
Despite the loss, Kamilla Cardoso shined for the Sky with a career-high 22 points and nine rebounds. Michaela Onyenwere also made an impact with 15 points. The Sky, now 11-21, suffered their sixth consecutive loss, putting them in a precarious position in the playoff race with only a half-game lead over the Atlanta Dream for the final playoff spot.
Minnesota took control early in the game, never trailing after a strong 14-4 opening run led by Collier and Williams. Although the Sky fought back with an 11-2 run in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 62-all, Williams' clutch baskets put the Lynx ahead for good.
The Lynx, who had their six-game win streak snapped earlier, have shown resilience and dominance in the latter part of the season. With the playoffs approaching, both teams will look to finish the season strong and secure their spots in the postseason.
