Ange Postecoglou has all the tools to be a Spurs success story, but may struggle for acceptance in North London due to a certain "snootiness about the Scottish league".
That's according to former Manchester City and QPR defender Nedum Onuoha, who was discussing the Aussie's speculated departure on BBC Radio Five Live with outgoing City Academy Director Jason Wilcox. Both men were full of praise for Postecoglou's mental strength and character and Wilcox offered an intriguing insight into how well the Melburnian is respected within his own treble chasing side after his performances with the Yokohama F Marinos.
Wilcox said: "I know people at Man City who are very familiar with Postecoglou, because he worked within the City Football Group at Yokohama for three years and they were really impressed with the work he did. I think what Tottenham need right now is someone who can deal with all the nonsense going on off the pitch.
"He's also a winner, wherever he's been he's won things...so I hope people aren't too snooty about the fact he's not managed in a big league, I think he's definitely got something about him and the players that play for him always talk highly of him as well so I think Tottenham could do well there."
Onuoha's response highlighted the kind of challenges Ange will face in winning over sections of the support, with some fans even leading a #NoToPostecoglou social media charge: "I agree, as long as people allow him the chance to do what he's going to do, but I don't think they will. I think there is a little bit of a snootiness, you're right, about the Scottish league."
If the 57-year-old does indeed make the move to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium it would arguably represent the kind of seismic managerial appointment of a Scottish-based manager on a level not seen since Graeme Souness's departure to Liverpool.
