It's now up to Spurs and Celtic to agree on a compensation figure, as the North London side will need to buy him out of his 12-month rolling contract in Glasgow.
It comes just two days after the 57-year-old guided Celtic to their latest treble, which was the eighth in their history.
The Parkhead board will now need to up their succession planning, with a new manager needed in place as soon as possible ahead of pre-season in three weeks.
Postecoglou repeatedly refused to be drawn on his future before or after the weekend's Scottish Cup final win over Inverness, instead insisting that the focus should be on the game and celebrating.
It's believed that he will take John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan with him to Spurs, as well as other staff members.
