Ange Postecoglou swerves Rangers transfer 'trap' as Celtic learn lessons from title defence misstep

Craig Moore reckons that Ange Postecoglou has learned from Rangers' mistakes of last summer after quickly getting to work in strengthening the title-winning Celtic team.

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota have both joined permanently after successful loan spells at Parkhead last season, while Benjamin Siegrist arrived as backup to Joe Hart and Alexandro Bernabei will compete with Greg Taylor to become first-choice left-back. The Australian's summer shopping is far from over with two more recruits on the agenda, and a midfield enforcer appearing to be at the top of the wish list.

It's a stark contrast from Rangers ' efforts in the transfer window last summer with Nnamdi Ofoborh and Fashion Sakala arriving on pre-contract agreements, while John Lundstram and Juninho Bacuna also made the move to the Scottish Premiership from south of the border. Only Lundstram held down a regular starting spot, and it fell to the title-winning squad to take the club to the Europa League final and Scottish Cup triumph last term.

Former Ibrox skipper Moore reckons the lack of business proved costly for his former side in the Premiership run-in. He praised fellow countryman Postecoglou for adding competition for places and depth ahead of defending their crown.

He told the Go Radio Football Show : “It’s two massive signings for Celtic, that they are already aware of and had fantastic seasons. Bernabei comes in and gives them strength in depth there and some competition for places. Ange is, I’m sure, still looking for another two or three players.

“You’ve got to admire Ange’s methods and philosophy. Yes it was a successful season that just went passed, but he doesn’t want that to be the end. He still feels there is a lot of improvement and a lot of growth in the team. That is really, really important as champions.

“I think Rangers fell into the trap last season - they stood still. There is always someone across the road who is desperate to takeover. I think it’s a good message from Ange.”
