Ange Postecoglou 'rated' at Manchester City as Celtic hero Chris Sutton draws Arsene Wenger comparison

Manchester City are reportedly tracking Ange Postecoglou closely as the Australian stands on the brink of a league title at Celtic.

And concerns he couldn't do it at the top level have been firmly dismissed by Chris Sutton, who sees parallels with Arsene Wenger before he joined Arsenal.

Postecoglou has overseen a dramatic Parkhead turnaround and Sunday's victory over Rangers leaves them six points clear heading into the final six games.

Having already clinched the Premier Sports Cup, a domestic treble is well within their reach in the Australian's debut season in Scotland.

He was known to City long before he joined Celtic having managed Yokohama F. Marinos under the City Football Group umbrella.

And according to journalist Rory Smith on BBC Radio 5 Live, his star is on the rise at the Premier League champions with senior figures within the club seriously rating him.

It's led to talk he could one day replace Pep Guardiola and while that seems very fanciful at this stage, Sutton sees no reason why he can't one day make the step to the big leagues.

He reckons Postecoglou's pedigree is overlooked because he's spent much of his career in Australia and Japan - and feels it's insulting to say he isn't up to a top job down south.

Sutton said on the same show: "We’re talking about a guy with an unbelievable track record, but he’s sneered at because his track record is in Australia and Japan.

"We’re questioning now whether he’s up for taking a job in the Premier League. What more does he have to do?"

Fellow pundit Micah Richards then interjected, saying that players don't go to Japan "in their prime", so managers should be held to the same standard.

But Sutton wasn't having it as he drew comparisons to Arsene Wenger, who was manager of Nagota Grampus Eight in Japan when he took the Arsenal job.

He went on to win three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups at the Gunners and Sutton reckons Postecoglou could shut the doubters up in a similar fashion.

He said: "Arsene Wenger was unheard of wasn’t he?

"Arsene Wenger was laughed at, sneered at – ‘a school teacher’. That’s what Arsene Wenger was when he took over Arsenal and what a career he had.

"So why are we doubting whether Ange Postecoglou, who’s managed his national team at a World Cup, could manage in the Premier League? I find that preposterous."
