Ange Postecoglou insists Celtic Invincibles record isn't a target as he names the Parkhead star fans 'love to watch'

Ange Postecoglou wants his side's unbeaten run to continue - but whether or not the Celtic boss eclipses Brendan Rodgers' feat is of little interest to him.

Postecoglou is preparing his side for a trip to St Johnstone as they look to take another step towards defending their title. With 42 points still up for grabs Celtic could yet better Rodgers’ Invincibles by finishing on 109 points - if they win all 14 of their remaining games.

But the boss isn’t interested in targets - insisting there is no ceiling to his ambitions. He said: "I don't really set those kind of targets. If you do that, you kind of put a ceiling on what you can do. If I had set the target that we want to beat the team that Brendan had, then what if we’d beat it with two games to spare? Do the players think then, 'Well we have done it?' Let's just be the best we can be and see where that takes us. If it means we fall short of an Invincible team that Brendan created, then it won't be for the want of trying.

"We've shown that in just over 18 months, four transfer windows, we can be a pretty good side. With more work and more determination to improve, who knows what we can achieve."

Postecoglou will watch on in envy as the European competitions kick back into action later this month. But he says the free midweeks will be beneficial to integrating his four January signings and taking his side to the next level.

The Aussie said: "We knew that coming back after the break it was going to be really hectic for us. We navigated that really well in terms of our performances, and the results have been really good as well.

"It calms down now after the weekend as we have no midweek games for a while but that gives us a chance to work well with the squad. We will do some really meaningful work with the squad and maintain our levels.

"With the new players coming in, we will be able to really integrate them into things. We'd much prefer we were still in Europe but this does give us a chance to work with the players on our game-style.

"That will just make our training sessions more competitive and I see this as a good little block where we can work individually and collectively with the players to improve. Hopefully that is reflected in the performances in games.”

Postecoglou insists Celtic’s season finale will be smiles better now Jota has hit top gear again. The Hoops boss insists its difficult to keep the grin off his Portuguese wonder at the best of times even when injury and illness affected his game time either side of the World Cup break.

But after hitting the goal trail against Kilmarnock and Dundee United last month the winger looks set to play a key role as the Hoops go after the Treble.

And Postecoglou said: "People forget that Jota had an unbelievable start to the season. He was incredible in the first few months and then he picked up an injury, and also had a bit of illness.

"But I agree, he has been outstanding for us in the last couple of weeks. He has looked really bright with the ball, he is working hard and physically he is in great shape.

"Mentally he is in a great space and that is great for us. It all means he can finish the season really strong.

"If he is at his best, he isn't just a fantastic player for us but he is one who all our supporters love to watch. It's exciting every time he gets the ball.

"I don't think there would ever be a point where Jota doesn't love what he is doing. But like every footballer, you want to feel in a good condition to give the best of yourself.

"If you aren't, you can get frustrated as you want to do things, you aren't able to. But he's in a great space now and that's great for us.”
