Andy Walker tables bold Rangers return for Steven Gerrard as he pinpoints fan factor that 'doesn't bode well' for Gio

Andy Walker has floated the idea of a Rangers return for Steven Gerrard if he is axed by Aston Villa and Gio van Bronckhorst leaves Ibrox.

It's almost a year since the Liverpool icon traded the Scottish Premiership for the English Premier League but things have yet to really take off at Villa Park since Gerrard's arrival. The club steered clear of the relegation spots after Gerrard left the then-Scottish champions to take over from Dean Smith, but fans have been left unhappy this term with the club only sitting outside of the relegation zone on goal difference ahead of facing Fulham on Thursday.

Similarly, his successor at Rangers has come under scrutiny with the club trailing Celtic in the title race and following a series of disappointing performances. The horrendous form in the Champions League has also ramped up the pressure on the Dutchman with Napoli, Ajax and Liverpool all dishing out hammerings.

The narrow Premier Sports Cup win over Dundee is the latest lacklustre showing from the side, with some sections of the home crowd booing the team off after the 1-0 win. Walker told The Go Radio Football Show that he felt there were major problems going on at the club.

He said: "There is something not quite right at Rangers. They beat Dundee United 2-1 and the fans weren't happy. The Champions League embarrassment was painful, and when you are playing Dundee at home you are allowing for a number of changes.

"You are expecting the players who come in to make a difference and show they are capable of playing much more regularly. Getting booed off after a victory doesn't bode well."

The conversation then move on to Gerrard's struggles at Aston Villa. Walker then indulged in hyping up a potential succession plan at Ibrox.

Walker went on: "He's on a shaky peg. Villa fans aren't happy, and they have spent a lot of money. They aren't happy about the quality that is on view, so I wouldn't be surprised (if he was sacked). It's a brutal business down there.

"Villa rightly or wrongly are seen as one of the top six clubs. I still think he has another job in him, for what he did at Rangers. He wouldn't come back to Rangers though, would he?"

However, fellow pundit Leanne Crichton was quick to shut down the point saying: 'I think if you were to give Rangers fans the choice between Steven Gerrard or Michael Beale they would take Michael Beale as the next Rangers manager. I think he had a huge influence (Beale). I think he delivered a lot of the content in terms of the system and the player recruitment."

Walker chipped in: "I think sometimes that is a skill, identifying someone who came come in on the training ground and wants to be a manager. Someone who is smart and clever, and you can deliver a lot of the messages."

Crichton continued: "It would be an interesting one. I'm sure if Giovanni van Bronckhorst did vacate the Rangers hot seat Steven Gerrard would be immediately linked with a return, if he was out of a job."
